Greenpeace has set a precedent by bringing the first successful private prosecution of a manufacturing company under the Water Act 1989. The chemical company Albright & Wilson was fined £2,000 by magistrates for breaching several metal limits in the discharge consent for its Whiehaven works in Cumbria.
