The Phurnacite smokeless fuel plant operated by British Coal subsidiary Coal Products acquired a further blot on its environmental record when Aberaman magistrates convicted the company of two water pollution offences in 1988. On both occasions, spillages of gas liquor resulted in breaches of a discharge consent for ammonia and thiocyanate, polluting the river Cynon. The firm was fined a total of £1,700, with £700 costs.
