Great Lakes Chemical (Europe) has been fined £2,400 for an incident in which two drums containing phosphorous trichloride and miristyle bromide were disposed of at a landfill site in Durham which was not licensed to take the waste. A cloud of hydrochloric acid drifted over the landfill and an adjacent footpath when the drum containing phosphorous trichloride was ruptured by a compactor and the chemical reacted with water.
