One of the first prosecutions in the UK involving a breach of an EEC Directive was concluded successfully this month when Avonmouth chemical manufacturer Tenneco Organics was fined £3,000 for two offences under section 32 of the Control of Pollution Act 1974. The case was brought by the Wessex Water Authority, which alleged that discharges of the pesticide lindane from the site exceeded consent limits on two occasions during 1986.
