Walsall convictions raise concern over growing hazardous waste imports

A Walsall company and two of its senior officers were convicted of 18 offences involving imported hazardous wastes by Aldridge magistrates on 27 February. The case has highlighted the growing involvement of small firms with little or no expertise in waste management in a trade which has blossomed massively since 1984.

The proceedings were brought by Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council and the West Midlands Waste Management Co-ordination Authority against M Joseph & Son (Winfield) Ltd. The firm specialises in aluminium scrap recovery and asbestos removal.
