An innovative method of disposing of ammonia refrigerant was rewarded with a large fine this month, when South West Water prosecuted refrigerator servicing company Frigoscandia Contracting for a major pollution incident on the river Okement. The firm was servicing equipment at McVitie's biscuit factory in Okehampton, and bubbled the gas through a tank of running water which overflowed, releasing ammonia into the river. More than 8,000 trout and salmon were killed in the incident. On 26 March, Okehampton magistrates fined Frigoscandia £750 on each of two charges, and ordered it to pay £340 costs.
