Express Foods has won the distinction of being fined the highest know amount for offences under the Control of Pollution Act 1974 and the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975. In a case before Carlisle Crown Court, the firm was found guilty of discharging ammonia into the river Eden at Appleby, Cumbria, in July, causing a serious fish kill. The court fined Express Foods £12,500 for each of two offences, and awarded costs of £1,200 to North West Water.
