All in a year's industrial pollution in Yorkshire

Much of the ENDS Report is devoted to publicising examples of good environmental practice by industry. Just for a change, we draw below on the Yorkshire Water Authority's latest four quarterly water quality reports to highlight some examples of industrial pollution caused by sustained incompetence and lack of care for the environment where they were not the result of quite deliberate illegality.

The Confederation of British Industry put the matter in perspective in a leaflet produced for the debate on the environment at its annual conference in Glasgow this month. Progressive companies, the leaflet says, have responded to growing public concern for the environment by recognising that this is an aspect of their business which management must address.
