A maximum fine of £2,000, with £200 costs, was imposed on ICI Mond Division by Winsford magistrates on 16 December for a pollution incident on the river Weaver. The fine followed a discharge from the firm's ammonia-soda plant at Winnington, Cheshire, in July in which ammonia concentrations were twice the maximum allowed by its discharge consent. About 100 fish were killed in the incident.
