Closure of water supply intakes on the Dee following pollution incidents has become a regular occurrence. This month, speciality coatings manufacturer Ferro (GB) of Chirk, Clwyd, was fined £1,000 for two of three incidents last January which caused extensive phenol contamination of water supplies on Deesside (ENDS Report 111, p 7). The company, which did not warn the water authorities that its works was polluting the river, denied liability for the third and heaviest incident, but paid the Welsh Water Authority £22,000 in an out-of-court settlement for the costs of remedial measures.
