A Manchester firm, Seville Tank Cleaning, was fined £3,600 this month for causing one of the most serious industrial accidents in Yorkshire in recent years. One of the firm's tankers was due to deliver sodium hypochlorite to Hays Chemicals of Slaithwaite, but through a series of muddles took ferric chloride - though still carrying hazard warning panels for sodium hypochlorite - to the Yorkshire works. When the load was discharged into a tank already containing bleach, the resulting reaction liberated a cloud of chlorine which hospitalised 29 people.
