Natural England needs more money and independence, says Gove’s choice for chair

Tony Juniper, environment secretary Michael Gove’s preferred candidate to take up the role of chair of Natural England, will press for more money and greater independence should his appointment be confirmed, he told MPs yesterday.

Speaking at his pre-appointment hearing, conducted by members of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee and the Environmental Audit Committee, Juniper said the nature regulator would need to be better resourced if it is to deliver the government’s “rising ambitions” for the environment.
