‘Time to stop this circus’: environmental sector responds to Brexit bill defeat

Green groups and companies have expressed deep concern about the government’s approach to Brexit, after MPs last night resoundingly rejected the withdrawal agreement.

MPs voted by a majority of 149 against the Withdrawal Bill, which would have approved the deal painstakingly negotiated with Brussels to establish a 20-month transition period once the UK leaves the EU.

Many remained unconvinced that the UK would not be trapped in an indefinite ‘backstop’ to prevent a hard border being established in Northern Ireland, after attorney general Geoffrey Cox said last-minute legal clarifications would not give the UK any power to leave the arrangement unilaterally.
