Natural capital approach ‘very alien’ to waste sector

The natural capital approach remains “very alien” to waste industry practitioners, according to the trade body representing the sector.

Speaking at a natural capital conference yesterday, Jacob Hayler, executive director of the Environmental Services Association (ESA), said practitioners “don’t really understand what practical changes this might have… what the implications are… and how it might be applied to us”.

“In academic circles there’s a good understanding and it’s becoming increasingly embedded in policy,” he said, adding that the waste sector understands metrics, indicators, carbon and recycling rates but that natural capital remained opaque.
