One in 10 DEFRA staff experienced bullying in 2017

One in 10 DEFRA civil servants say they were bullied or harassed last year, with only a quarter of those who formally reported it saying the matter had been resolved, a new survey has revealed.

Some 34% of staff experiencing bullying or harassment reported the problem, a drop of 5 percentage points on 2017 figures. Of those who did, only 26% said it had solved the problem, the survey shows.

While the DEFRA figures compare favourably to the average across the civil service, where 12% of staff say they were bullied or harassed and 20% indicate reporting the issue helped resolve it, they represent a small increase on the 2017 survey, when only 9% of DEFRA staff said they had experienced bullying. Similarly, fewer people chose to report it in 2018 than in 2017.
