Welsh opencast coal mine to resume extraction

Powys County Council last week gave the green light to extend the operating life of the Nant Helen surface mine near Ystradgynlais.

The mine, which provides coal to the Tata steel works in Port Talbot, had suspended operations in 2016 on the news that Aberthaw, Wales’ largest coal-fired power station, would be reducing its electricity output.

However, the mine’s owners, Celtic Energy, had applied in 2017 to extend the time period allowed to continue operations, which were meant to stop by December 2018 under the existing planning permission, followed by a two-year programme to restore the site.
