National Infrastructure Commission chair Sir John Armitt explains how environmental considerations are shaping the powerful body’s recommendations to ministers

Nobody can predict the future, but the chair of the powerful body responsible for advising ministers on the country’s long-term infrastructure challenges, Sir John Armitt, is taking a pretty good stab at it. The body he leads, the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), is responsible for drawing up a national infrastructure assessment once in every parliament, the first of which, published last year, is intended to provide a clear, long-term strategy for the UK’s economic infrastructure up to 2050.
