Natural England awards fast-track protected species licence to water firm

Southern Water has become the fourth water company in England and Wales to receive an ‘organisational license’ to help speed up the planning process for developments which might affect the habitats of rare or protected species.

The utility company announced the award of the new licence for its 10km sewer pipeline development in Chichester earlier this week.

The organisational license removes the administrative burden on water companies needing to apply to Natural England for multiple and individual licences, and allows the firm to go ahead with operations that may affect protected species like great crested newts.

So far, the company has submitted three organisational licences for developments including Snowdown and Horsmonden in Kent, and Otterbourne in Hampshire.
