EA admits no-deal Brexit threat to radioactive waste exports

Organisations unable to transfer radioactive waste because of Brexit will be able to store it above the levels set out in their permits or permit exemptions, the Environment Agency (EA) has said.

In a guidance document published today, the EA recognises that “because of EU exit you may not be able to transfer radioactive waste… to facilities outside the UK”.

The waste industry has previously expressed concern that crashing out of the EU without a deal could lead to severe disruption of the UK’s waste exports.
