Gove’s green Brexit plans: 9 things you need to know

Further details have emerged in the past few days about the government’s post-Brexit environmental governance arrangements, including the identity of an interim green Brexit commissioner and where the green watchdog could be based. Here are nine things you need to know about DEFRA’s green governance vision.

1 An interim secretariat has been created and is ready to go

DEFRA has set up a temporary body comprising 16 civil servants who will record breaches of environmental law while the legal responsibilities of the permanent Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) are defined and staff hired. It will function separately from DEFRA and will be located away from the department.
