Council reaches £1.75m settlement with Viridor over contamination dispute

Milton Keynes Council has reached a £1.75m settlement with waste company Viridor, after the material that was collected and sent to the city’s recycling facility consistently breached agreed contamination levels.

A Viridor spokesperson confirmed the settlement had been agreed to cover the historic costs of contamination in the council’s recycling sacks between during a contract with the council running from 2013 to 2019.

The council had initially estimated  that only 10% of the rubbish its residents placed in recycling bins would be contaminated.

However, according to the council, around 25% of sacks were contaminated by materials including dirty nappies, pet waste and food over the contract period.
