European Commission expresses ‘severe concern’ over UK air quality

High levels of particulate matter, ozone and nitrogen dioxide are responsible for tens of thousands of premature deaths each year in the UK, the European Commission has warned in a review of national environmental policy.

While the Commission’s environmental implementation report, released this morning, praises the UK’s efforts to cut emissions of air pollutants, it notes that “the country needs to make  additional efforts to meet its emission reduction commitments” set by the National Emissions Ceilings Directive.
