Draft BREF on ferrous metal processing issued after 18-year wait

Environmental requirements for ferrous metal industries are set to be tightened, following the publication of draft EU pollution control guidance.

A new best available techniques (BAT) reference document (BREF) for sector was published at the end of last month and should be finalised within a few years. It will replace an outdated predecessor that was issued in 2001 under the defunct Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control Directive. No other BREF currently in place is so old.

The draft applies to hot and cold rolling of steel and coating activities such as galvanisation. It also covers the independent operation of associated wastewater treatment plants.
