Senior officials blocked action on toxic chemicals, says former civil servant

A former civil servant has accused senior officials at the business department of blocking changes to regulations that would cut the use of harmful chemicals in UK households

Terry Edge, who from 2004 to 2015 was the lead official at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (and its predecessor departments) responsible for furniture and fire safety regulations, told backbench MPs yesterday that he left his job over the government’s failure to amend the regulations to address concerns over the use of flame-retardant chemicals.
