Brexit risks harming UK climate leadership, warns ex-WTO chief

Leaving the EU threatens to “destroy” the UK’s leadership on climate change if it signs free trade deals that do not respect the environment, according to a former head of the World Trade Organisation

Pascal Lamy, who served as WTO director-general from 2005 to 2013, will warn in a speech today that any new trade deal or post-Brexit agreement between the UK and the EU must protect “the region’s global leadership position on climate change”.

He will add: “Without new safeguards to ensure there is strong continued cooperation and alignment, Brexit could destroy environmental protections – well beyond allowing chlorinated chicken imports,” a major source of controversy over a possible trade deal with the US.
