Environment Bill: Treasury supports ‘well-designed’ green standards

Chancellor Philip Hammond has set out his support for placing “sustainability into the heart of our economic model” at a meeting with business and environment groups.

Hammond hosted talks with environment secretary Michael Gove and green business coalition the Broadway Initiative on Wednesday to discuss the way forward on the Environment Bill.

The Environmental Audit Committee said in a report last week that it was “clear where the competing interests of different departments have influenced the drafting of the bill”, highlighting that ministers would not be required to ‘have regard to’ environmental principles when creating tax policy.
