Welsh Water prosecutes manufacturer for polluting sewer network

A wood panel manufacturer has been fined £80,000 for breaching its consent to discharge trade effluent and making an unauthorised discharge into the public sewer network.

Kronospan Ltd, which pleaded guilty to both offences at Wrexham Magistrates Court last week, was also ordered to pay almost £48,000 in costs.

The court heard that  Welsh Water launched a major investigation following the discovery of high levels of ammonia coming in to the Five Fords Wastewater Treatment Works near Wrexham, in north Wales.

Welsh Water identified Kronospan as the source of the problem after samples taken at the firm's site in Chirk revealed significant breaches of its consent to discharge trade effluent. Welsh Water officers also witnessed an unauthorised discharge into the public sewer during a site visit, according to the water company.
