DEFRA launches environmental research programme

DEFRA last week launched a research programme which it says will inform and shape key future policy decisions on some of the UK’s “most pressing environmental issues”.

The department has appointed six senior academic fellows to focus on five key areas: rural land use, food, air quality, marine, and resources and waste.

The programme will be led by DEFRA’s chief scientific adviser, Professor Ian Boyd, and each of the five systems will be covered by a senior academic fellow, taking a ‘systems mapping’ approach. This involves identifying how a policy change in one area might affect another and making sure the connections between environmental issues are “properly considered”.
