Ofwat mulls financial incentives for ‘most sustainable’ water companies

Water industry regulator Ofwat is considering introducing more stringent environmental reporting requirements for water companies and possible financial rewards for the best performers.

In a document setting out “emerging thinking” on its regulatory approach after 2020, Ofwat indicates that it may start reporting on water companies’ “progress in delivering for society”, which could include partnering with existing accreditation bodies.

“We could also consider in future price reviews what process, reputational or financial incentives we might give to companies which are effective in delivering in the interests of society and the environment,” the document states.
