Scottish government plans ‘all-in’ 20p deposit return scheme

The Scottish government has outlined its proposals for an ‘all-in’ Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), which will cover glass, plastic and aluminium drinks containers of all sizes.

Scotland’s environment secretary, Roseanna Cunningham, made the announcement yesterday in the Scottish Parliament, confirming that the deposit would be set at 20p and that all retailers selling drinks to consumers would be required to participate in the DRS.

She said there would be an opportunity to comment on the proposed approach when draft legislation is published later this year.

Under the proposals the scheme would be overseen by a not-for-profit organisation which will be set up by soft drinks producers and retailers.
