Plastic dumping law adds to exporter uncertainty

The UN has passed an amendment to the Basel Convention, meaning that the UK will no longer be able to export mixed plastics to some countries without first receiving written consent.

The Basel Convention is a global agreement, with 187 signatories, of which the UK is a member. It determines what is classed as 'green list waste' - which can generally be exported without prior notification of competent authorities.

Until now all non-hazardous plastic waste has been classified as ‘green list’ under the convention, but last year Norway proposed an amendment to restrict the waste to effectively single polymer 'clean' plastics.
