Councils increasingly sending low-grade plastics for incineration

Councils are increasingly sending polyethylene terephthalate (PET) pots, tubs and trays for incineration due to severely limited end markets, a survey of local authorities suggests.

Plastics recycling organisation Recoup asked 50 councils to provide details on plastics collections and their end destinations.

More than half (52%) of the respondents said that they had experienced difficulties with plastics markets in recent months – particularly since China introduced a ban on the import of post-consumer plastics.
