Plastic straws and cotton buds ‘banned’ from 2020

A ban on all plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds in England will come into force from April 2020, the environment secretary has announced.

Michael Gove said earlier today that the ban will include exemptions: those with medical needs or a disability who need access to plastic straws will be able to purchase them from registered pharmacies over the counter or online.

Restaurants, pubs and bars will also be able to provide customers with plastic straws upon request but will not be able to display or automatically hand them out.
