‘Lipstick on a pig’: MPs and green groups savage green Brexit proposals

Theresa May’s pledge to maintain environmental standards after Brexit as part of a new Brexit proposal to be put before parliament has caused outrage among green campaigners.

In a speech on Tuesday, May said the new deal would “guarantee no change in the level of environmental protection when we leave the EU”, prompting a cries of disbelief from green groups who have been pushing for the UK to at least match future EU environmental policy after Brexit.

Amy Mount, head of the environmental coalition Greener UK, asked how the commitment to “no change” in protections could “in any way match up to parliament declaring an environment and climate emergency?”
