Cardigan Bay oil and gas survey proposals ‘incompatible’ with protected status

Conservationists have condemned proposals from an international energy company to search for oil and gas in a special area of conservation (SAC) off the Welsh coast.

Eni UK Ltd applied to the Offshore Petroleum Regulator for Environment and Decommissioning (OPRED) in March to carry out a seismic survey in Cardigan Bay, which has the UK's biggest resident population of dolphins and is home to thousands of porpoises for part of the year.

The application seeks permission to carry out the survey - which involves firing loud shock waves out of a submerged gun - "sometime between" 1 June and 30 September.
