Interview: What Tony Juniper thinks about budget cuts, bird culling and bringing back the missing lynx

Tony Juniper talks to ENDS about nature recovery, net gain, budget cuts and rewilding in his first press interview since becoming chair of Natural England

Joining Natural England on the day the bird kill licensing controversy kicked off must have felt like walking into a bar-room brawl. Under threat of legal action, the nature regulator withdrew three general bird control licences in a move which infuriated many in the landowning, shooting and farming communities and opened a hefty can of worms. 

Its new chair Tony Juniper says the crisis hit three hours after he arrived: “I was being briefed about the announcement we were going to make about general licences, which I knew nothing about until that moment.”
