Row over British recyclable waste found in Malaysia

Malaysian authorities have disputed claims in an upcoming BBC documentary that plastic waste shipped to the country from Britain for recycling is being dumped or burned.

The BBC filmed a site near the town of Ipoh as part of its War on Plastic programme, fronted by celebrity chef and presenter Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and due to be aired on 10 June.

The trailer shows the presenter surrounded by mountains of plastic - some of it recyclable and much of it recognisable as British. According to media reports, Fearnley Whittingstall calls the situation a “dystopian nightmare” and says he no longer feels good about recycling.
