‘We will return it without mercy’: Malaysia gets tough on waste exports

Malaysia has ordered thousands of tonnes of contaminated and dumped plastic waste to be sent back to the UK, US, Canada, Australia, France and Saudi Arabia and has said it wants to ban such imports from wealthier nations.

Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysia’s environment minister, announced yesterday that inspections at Port Klang had identified 60 shipping containers full of unrecyclable waste from the six countries. She said: “What the citizens of the UK believe they send for recycling is actually dumped in our country... If they ship to Malaysia we will return it back without mercy.”
