Luton airport seeks increase in allowable noise after breaching legal limits

London Luton Airport has been in breach of its night time noise limits since 2017 and is seeking to increase the acoustic thresholds of its planning conditions in a bid to achieve compliance.

The airport has asked the council to amend a planning condition under section 73 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to increase the overall noise footprint of the planes coming into and out of the airport.

The change would affect the period between 2019-2024 and “avoid subsequent enforcement action with financial implications,” according to the operator’s environmental statement published last month.
