Will the Tory leadership race derail the government’s ‘green Brexit’ plans?

The contest to choose the next prime minister is now in full swing. Almost a dozen Conservative MPs have formally announced they are standing in the leadership race, with several more considering putting their names forward.

Following the unexpectedly strong performance of the Green Party in the European elections, the wave of climate protests around the world and the Extinction Rebellion in the UK, it is no surprise that environment and climate issues are high on some of the leadership hopefuls’ agenda.

Boris Johnson, the bookies’ favourite to become prime minister, has endorsed a ‘One Nation Conservative’ commitment to climate action and the environment. In a newspaper article last week he said the UK should be “leading the world in tackling climate change and all the other threats to the natural world” after Brexit.
