Business leaders call for net-zero emissions by 2050

The government should “immediately” enshrine in law a target to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, according to a group of UK business leaders, including the heads of major firms Shell, John Lewis and Sainsbury’s.

In an open letter to the prime minister, the companies say that setting a legally-binding target, as set out by the Committee on Climate Change, would mean the country can “show leadership on a global level while strengthening the UK economy”.

The letter adds: “The credibility of a net-zero target relies on it being rapidly underpinned by a robust set of policies.”
