Scope of Environment Bill revealed in EA board meeting papers

The much-anticipated Environment Bill, currently being drafted by DEFRA, is being developed under five main policy “chapters” and will put the 25-Year Environment Plan on a statutory footing, according to the Environment Agency (EA).

The environmental principles and governance section of the draft bill was published in December, outlining a proposed new Office for Environmental Protection, alongside a national policy statement setting out how the principles should be applied.

The second part of the draft bill, expected next month, will put the 25-Year Environment Plan on a statutory footing alongside firm, legally binding targets in a section of the bill that will cover governance and accountability, according to the Environment Agency’s latest board meeting papers, published last week.
