‘An historic decision’: Theresa May to enshrine net-zero greenhouse gas ambition in law

Prime minister Theresa May has announced that she will table legislation to enshrine a 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas ambition in law, in what is being hailed as an historic moment in the battle to curb climate change.

The legislation will adopt the independent advisory Committee on Climate Change’s (CCC) recommendation that the government should move beyond an 80% carbon reduction target, to deliver net-zero by 2050 for all greenhouse gas emissions.

The move comes less than 24 hours after the Welsh government committed to not only follow the CCC’s advice in setting a 95% reduction in its greenhouse emissions by 2050, but to go further and aim to reach net-zero by this time.
