Conservative leadership race: Gove vows to make ‘climate emergency’ top priority

Environment secretary Michael Gove has pledged to focus on tackling climate change if he is elected leader of the Conservative Party.

“The single most important thing we need to do is to make sure we hand on our planet and our country in a better state to the next generation,” he told a studio audience in a leadership hustings broadcast by Channel 4 on Sunday evening.

He added: “That’s why we need to tackle the climate emergency that as environment secretary I put at the heart of our politics.”

Foreign secretary and leadership hopeful Jeremy Hunt also said in the hustings that the government should make environmental action one of his core priorities.
