UK bids to host major UN climate change gathering ‘COP26’ in 2020

The UK has put forward its bid to lead COP26 climate talks in partnership with Italy which will host the preparatory events beforehand.

If successful, the UK will assume the presidency of the 26th conference of the parties (COP), tipped to be the most important gathering since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015.

Under the Italy agreement, the UK would hold the main COP meetings while the Italians would host preparatory events, known as the pre-COP, as well as a youth event, “in recognition of the disproportionate impact that climate change will have on young people,” according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
