EU calls for ‘substantially more ambitious’ UK climate policies for 2030

The UK’s existing set of climate action policies are not ambitious or comprehensive enough to meet its obligations under EU law, the European Commission has warned.

The EU executive announced on Tuesday that the UK’s draft National Energy and Climate Plan, submitted in December 2018 as part of the EU’s Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR), must more thoroughly indicate which policies and measures it intends to introduce for the period between 2021 to 2030.

The commission says that the UK has not provided details on how it will contribute to the EU-wide targets to meet 32% of the bloc’s energy needs from renewable sources and improve energy efficiency by 32.5% by 2030.
