Biffa facing fresh charges over illegal exports to Indonesia and India

The Environment Agency (EA) is prosecuting waste firm Biffa in a second case relating to the illegal export of waste, it was revealed in court this morning.

Biffa, one of the UK’s largest waste companies, was in Wood Green Crown Court for sentencing, after being found guilty last week of illegally exporting approximately 175 tonnes of household waste to China in 2015.

However, the judge presiding over the case agreed to an adjournment after Sailesh Mehta, prosecuting for the EA, revealed that the agency was at a pre-summons stage with another case against Biffa.

It is alleged that Biffa contravened the 2007 Transfrontier Shipment Regulations, this time with the export of 40 containers of waste to India and Indonesia at the end of 2018.
