EA says it cannot beat invasives without extra funding

The Environment Agency (EA) cannot be put in charge of invasive species enforcement without additional resources, according to the EA’s deputy director of agriculture, fisheries and the natural environment.

Dr Kevin Austin’s remarks were made yesterday as part of an ongoing inquiry into the threat of invasive species in freshwater environments, launched by the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC).

When pressed by the EAC if more EA enforcement powers would help the country tackle non-native invasive species in England, Austin said: “Responsibility is fine... as long as it comes with funding.”
