What is the Basel Convention?

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal is an international instrument governing transboundary movement of hazardous wastes and “other wastes”, namely household waste and incinerator ash. It aims to reduce hazardous waste generation and promote environmentally sound management, restrict transboundary movement of hazardous wastes and operate a regulatory system for permissible transboundary movement.
