Focus on: Coal's fading power

The UK’s record-breaking streak without coal power came to an end at 9.20pm on Tuesday 4 June, after 18 days and six hours without electricity generated from coal.

The coal-free run represents the longest continuous period without generating electricity from coal since the first coal power station opened in 1882, and breaks the previous record set in May, when Britain had a week without using electricity from coal.
